This works fine for still images, but may not work for animations since it recalculates the values for every frame of the animation. The normalize node takes the range of values from the z-pass, gives the highest a value of 1 and the lowest a value of 0. Now our image output looks like an inverted heightmap. Any part of our geometry more than 1 unit away from the camera will appear white (which is likely our entire map), which means we have to remap the range of values to be between 0-1.

This is because every pixel in our image is assigned a numerical value equal to the distance between the camera and the geometry in our scene measured in Blender Units (this might be displayed as meters, feet, or neither depending on your preferences). If we plug the depth output of the Render Layers node into the image input of the composite node, we’ll see…a blank white image. Now that our render is complete, lets take a look at the depth data created by our z-pass. The Mist Pass can also be used to create the same effect, but I find using the Z-pass gives the user a bit more control over the finished product. The one we’re concerned with is the Z-pass or depth pass (which might be activated by default).
